Jamie Carragher reveals what Liverpool need to win the Premier League

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes the Reds could boost their chances of winning the Premier League if Arsenal and Manchester City meet in the Champions League semi-final.

Jurgen Klopp’s side had the opportunity to return to the top of the table yesterday, but were unable to do so. They had 15 attempts on goal in the first half against Manchester United, but scored just once.

In the second half, a defensive error allowed Bruno Fernandes to register a wonder goal in the 50th minute. Kobbie Mainoo put United into the lead with a fantastic curler after the hour mark.

Liverpool managed to equalise through a penalty converted by Mohamed Salah, but they were unable to find a late winner. The Reds were guilty of missing five big chances at Old Trafford.

Speaking after the game, Carragher said that Liverpool need Arsenal and City to play each other in the Champions League semi-final.

The Reds legend believes this would take a lot out of the two – both psychologically and physically and it would help his former club.

He said on The Gary Neville Podcast: “For Liverpool to win the league — and I’ve always believed this — they need the two of them [Manchester City and Arsenal] to play each other in the Champions League semi-final.

“They both need to get through because I know psychologically and physically what it’s like playing an English team. It takes a lot out of you and when you’re going for a league title, that could help Liverpool.”

Liverpool are currently trailing Arsenal by a goal difference of nine, but they should be optimistic of leapfrogging the Gunners during the final seven games of the Premier League campaign.

Both them and Gunners have Tottenham Hotspur and Aston Villa to face, but Mikel Arteta’s side also have to take on Manchester United at Old Trafford and Chelsea at the Emirates.

There is a higher possibility that Arsenal will drop points in the run-in, but the same can’t be said about City, who have a habit of building winning streaks towards the end of the season.

As Carragher said, the Reds may need Arsenal and City to meet in the Champions League semi-final. Two highly intense and tactical games between the duo could benefit Klopp’s men.
