Leeds United have made an offer to sign Mason Cotcher from Sunderland, according to a report from The Telegraph.
The 17-year-old forward impressed for the Sunderland under-18 side last season, and he was tracked by several clubs including Leeds, Arsenal and Rangers.
Sunderland Echo revealed earlier this year that Leeds have taken the youngster on trial, and the player was hoping to earn a professional contract at Thorp Arch.
The Telegraph now claim that Cotcher is all set to leave Sunderland, and the indications are Leeds are likely to win the race for his signature.
The youngster also trained with Arsenal before he moved to Leeds where he has impressed during a trial. The Black Cats are in line for compensation for their role in the player’s development if the player moves to Leeds.
Usually, in such cases, a tribunal would set a figure that needs to be paid.
Leeds keep focus on developing youth
The Whites are one of those clubs that have always given importance to developing youth talents. They have invested in young talents who have gone on to play for the senior team, for instance, Crysencio Summerville.
The 22-year-old joined a teenager and gradually progressed through the ranks. The Dutch attacking midfielder is now a key player for Leeds and has enjoyed a phenomenal campaign. He has managed 17 goals in the Championship this season and has played a massive role in taking Leeds to second in the Championship.
Cotcher is primarily a striker but he can also play in wide forward areas. His performances for Sunderland’s youth team have been impressive and Leeds are willing to sign him.
Leeds have shown great commitment to providing opportunities for players to represent the senior side over the years. However, he is likely to join the academy side and gradually make his way to the senior team, which won’t be easy especially if the Whites return to the Premier League.
