Mateo Joseph unlikely to start for Leeds United v Coventry City

Leeds United will look to maintain their outstanding form in the Championship when they face Coventry City on Saturday away from Elland Road.

The Whites are second in the league, one point behind Ipswich Town, but Leicester City could leapfrog both of them if they win their game in hand.

Leeds are unbeaten in the Championship in 2024, having picked up 13 wins and two draws, but are yet to hit their best form after the international break, with injuries to key players like Ilian Gruev, Connor Roberts and Willy Gnonto hampering the rhythm.

One player who has really impressed after the break is Mateo Joseph, and many have suggested that the 20-year-old should start in place of Patrick Bamford.

The 30-year-old striker has not scored in the last three games and missed a sitter against Hull City in the first half. Joseph, on the other hand, made an instant impact against Watford as he scored the equalising goal in the 2-2 draw within 25 seconds after coming from the bench.

However, it appears Farke wants to continue with Bamford upfront as he provides the experience his side need. In Thursday’s press conference, Farke praised Joseph, but he made his point clear about whom he prefers as the first-choice option.

Daniel Farke hints at continuing with Patrick Bamford in Coventry v Leeds

He said: “I like when everyone is buzzing about our players. Mateo deserves our praise, he has developed all season, but it’s important we’re not too driven by our emotions.

“Mateo has got one goal this season in the league, it’s not like without him we have no chance. He’s done well in cup comps, he scored the brace at Chelsea, great, important impact from the bench, this is also what we need.

“It’s good to have this player with this momentum because whenever he comes on at the moment he comes on with emotions and confidence, but so important to have experienced players on the pitch like Patrick who put a shift in.

“To have the experience and quality of Patrick available is also crucial, we play with 21 year-old Georginio, 22 year-old Cree Summerville – we need experienced players fit and available and in good shape.”

Leeds in the mix for a thrilling promotion race

Farke is absolutely spot on here. He is not the type of manager who gets swayed away by emotions, rather the Whites boss believes in consistency.

Bamford has been outstanding in the second half of the season after he returned from injury. He has managed seven goals and an assist in 12 league starts, and his work rate has been fantastic.

Joseph is an “exciting” young talent, but Farke wants to see him making an impact from the bench. With six games to go, this is hardly the time for experimentation, and Farke should not change methods that have worked well for him so far.

Bamford has the experience to handle pressure, and he needs to start ahead of Joseph.

It seems the Spaniard will have to remain content with a role on the bench, but it won’t hurt Leeds as long as the results are coming their way.

In other Leeds news, Farke has confirmed that 24-year-old player will miss the Championship clash against Coventry.
