Michael Bridges drools over Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister

Liverpool made a wholesome change to their midfield last summer and Jurgen Klopp has been vindicated with his transfer dealings.

The Reds sold Jordan Henderson and Fabinho, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita left the club as a free agent.

There was always scepticism about how Liverpool would attract top players without Champions League football, but the Reds managed to pull off deals for Alexis Mac Allister, Wataru Endo, Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch.

Endo and Szoboszlai have made massive contributions this season, but one player who has been sensational for the Reds is Mac Allister. He was a superb player at Brighton and was already a World Cup winner with Argentina, but Michael Bridges suggests that the 25-year-old has taken his game to a different level.

Klopp has used Mac Allister mostly as a defensive midfielder, a role he performed admirably well. Since he started playing further up the pitch, he has looked different class. Against Brighton at Anfield, he forged a telepathic understanding with Mohamed Salah and provided the killer pass from which the Egyptian netted the winner.

Bridges said on Optus Sport: “If you think of the magic moments that he has been involved with, big moments this season for Liverpool, with carving open goals or scoring himself, he has been absolutely monumental.

“Declan Rice no doubt has made a difference in the dynamics of Arsenal, the organisation, the leadership, defensive issues that they had, but Mac Allister for Liverpool… what a player! I have admired him for a number of years.

“I didn’t actually think he could get any better that he has been in the past when it was at Brighton, in his international level. His game’s gone to a new level.”

Mac Allister has looked sensational while playing an advanced role. He has got one of the sharpest brains in the team while his passing ability is just tremendous. Liverpool paid £35m to sign Mac Allister, and he is arguably one of the signings of the season.

The Reds have already won the Carabao Cup and are chasing Premier League and Europa League glory this season. Mac Allister will have to play a massive role in helping the Reds achieve their targets.

Liverpool will face Sheffield United in the Premier League on Thursday night at Anfield and a victory will take them to the top of the league. The Reds have received a double injury boost ahead of this game, with Andy Robertson and Curtis Jones set to return to the side.
