Newcastle United may have to offload a host of players this summer to comply with the PSR rules.
While there are suggestions that the Magpies may have to sell top assets like Alexander Isak or Bruno Guimaraes, the Magpies do not need to do that. At the same time, they will have to find a way yot ensure they do not cross the PSR limits.
However, there will be departures, and according to Chris Waugh, the Magpies striker Callum Wilson is almost certain to leave.
The 32-year-old striker is currently out injured but he is expected to return before the end of the season. He has scored seven goals in eight starts this season, but it looks like his time at St James’ Park is coming to an end, with his contract set to expire at the end of the season.
“I think this summer feels like a natural exit point for Wilson, given his age (32), injury issues and contract status (expires next June),” Waugh wrote for The Athletic.
Wilson has been superb for Newcastle United
Since joining from Bournemouth in the summer of 2020, Wilson has become a key player for the club. He has scored 46 goals for the Magpies in over 100 appearances and is being loved by the fans.
He is respected by everyone at the club, and Eddie Howe hailed him as an “outstanding” player last year. With the club struggling to comply with PSR rules, it makes sense for Newcastle to get rid of Wilson who has struggled with injury problems badly.
Jamaal Lascelles is all set to stay after his ACL injury, but the club will need to make a decision about veteran goalkeeper Martin Dubravka, who is keen to get first-team football.
Alexander Isak is the club’s first-choice striker, and he has been sensational this season. If Wilson leaves, the Magpies could be forced into buying another back-up striker, preferably someone with Premier League experience.
In other Newcastle news, key player is only two weeks away from returning to first-team training.
