Thomas Tuchel could be set for an emotional return to Chelsea this summer, with the Blues still mulling over the future of Mauricio Pochettino.
Sky reporter Florian Plettenberg reports that Tuchel is keen on a return to the Premier League and is eyeing a move to Manchester United or a return to Stamford Bridge.
Tuchel stepped down from his role as Bayern Munich manager after falling out with the board following a hugely disappointing campaign that ended trophyless.
The German tactician led the Bavarians to their first trophyless campaign in over a decade, losing out on the league title to Bayer Leverkusen before suffering a Champions League semi-final defeat to Real Madrid.
After their futile search for a replacement, Bayern considered a shocking U-turn and opened talks to extend Tuchel’s stay at the Allianz Arena.
However, both parties failed to find common ground, and Tuchel is poised for a fresh challenge in the Premier League this summer.
Chelsea are set to sit down with Pochettino soon to discuss his future at the club after a rollercoaster campaign that ended with the Blues finishing sixth in the Premier League.
The west Londoners are poised to return to Europe next season and could be playing in the Europa League if Manchester City beat Man United in the FA Cup final.
Despite his achievement, Pochettino is set to undergo an audit this summer to ascertain whether he will remain at the club for a second season.
Several reports claim there’s a huge chance the Argentine remains at Stamford Bridge after leading the Blues to the FA Cup semi-final and the EFL Cup final.
However, Tuchel is waiting in the wings to replace the former Paris Saint-Germain manager if Chelsea decide to shake things up again this summer.
Chelsea should stick with Pochettino
There has been a lot of chopping and changing both on and off the pitch since the Todd Boehly era began.
While there are still questions about Pochettino’s ability to bring success to west London, he has galvanised the squad and achieved a respectable finish, considering the turbulent campaign he had to navigate.
Keeping Pochettino would bring some semblance of stability to the Bridge, which is very important given the players are finally starting to gel.
Pochettino has one more year on his contract. It’ll be wise to allow him to build on his sixth-placed finish and see if he can get the club back into the Champions League next term.
