Liverpool likely to miss out on Inter Milan midfielder Nicolo Barella

Liverpool could be looking to sign a new midfielder this summer, but they are likely to miss out on Inter Milan hero Nicolo Barella.

Jurgen Klopp signed as many as four new midfielders last summer, while the Reds have talented players like Curtis Jones and Stefan Bajcetic in their ranks.

Arne Slot could still be looking to add a new midfielder. The Reds have been reportedly linked with a move for the 27-year-old Italian midfielder, but now it seems the player will remain in Italy for the next few years at least.

Barella is arguably one of the best midfielders in Serie A, and there were suggestions that a fee of around £77 million would be required to sign him.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Inter Milan has agreed to a new deal for Barella. His contract will be valid until June 2029, and his salary will increase. Inter Milan are looking to tie up a deal for Lautaro Martinez, as they are desperate to retain the services of key players at the club.

Barella is more of an attacking midfielder and the Reds probably do not need another player of his kind. On the contrary, it makes sense for Liverpool to sign a new defensive midfielder.

Liverpool signed Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis MacAllister, Wataru Endo and Dominik Szoboszlai last summer. As such, they are well stocked in midfield areas, but Michael Edwards might feel that a top-class defensive midfielder, possibly an upgrade over Endo, could add more depth to the side.

The Reds should aim to sign a new centre-back and an attacking wide winger. Furthermore, the Merseyside giants could also look to sign a backup goalkeeper if Caoimhin Kelleher decides to move elsewhere in search of regular games.

In other Liverpool news, the Reds are top of the list to sign Real Madrid player this summer.
