Newcastle United are looking to sign a new goalkeeper this summer and they have set their sight on Villarreal’s Filip Jorgensen.
The Magpies want someone to challenge Nick Pope for the starting role. They have been linked with Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale, Valencia’s Giorgi Mamardashvili and Burnley’s James Trafford.
However, Jorgensen has emerged as a real possibility. The 22-year-old has been one of the “sensations” in La Liga and he is operating at a “high level”. Wolves and Chelsea have discussed whether to move for Jorgensen and now Newcastle has joined the race.
The Yellow Submarine goalkeeper could be a genuine option for the Magpies if they fail to sign either Ramsdale or Mamardashvili. Villarreal value him at around £34 million, but Newcastle are hoping to get him for almost half the price, around £17 million.
Jorgensen has a contract at El Madrigal until 2027 and the La Liga club are expected to demand a high transfer fee for him.
Signing a new goalkeeper is a top priority
Pope remains the first-choice at Newcastle, but Eddie Howe will need a solid back-up keeper. Last season, the Magpies struggled badly after Pope dislocated his shoulders and didn’t play for a few months.
Martin Dubravka has been a reliable option all these years, but an upgrade is needed on the 35-year-old veteran. Newcastle feel that Ramsdale’s price is too high, and the same can be said about Mamardashvili.
Trafford can be a good option, but Chelsea are also in the frame for his signature. Jorgensen could be available in the market as Villarreal will get an economic boost from his sale, and Newcastle could be tempted to negotiate a deal for him.
