Newcastle United will be looking to bolster their goalkeeping department this summer, and they are showing keen interest in signing Giorgi Mamardashvili.
According to reliable transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano, the 23-year-old goalkeeper is set to leave Valencia this summer. The Magpies are in the race, while La Liga giants Atletico Madrid are also looking to sign him.
The Magpies need to offload some of their players to stay in balance with the PSR limit, and they could look to offload veteran goalkeeper Martin Dubravka. In case he leaves, Mamardashvili could come in as a big upgrade to the squad.
Newcastle have heavily scouted the goalkeeper this season, and Eddie Howe is a big fan of the 6ft 6in goalkeeper. According to a report from The Times, Newcastle are mainly looking at someone who can challenge Nick Pope and they are keen to recruit a new goalkeeper.
He has impressed for Ruben Baraja’s side and would cost in the region of £35m. He has missed just one game in the La Liga this season, and it appears that the Newcastle scouts are heavily impressed with what they have seen.
Giorgi Mamardashvili would be costly signing for Newcastle
Even if we take the injury factors into consideration, it doesn’t give a good reading that the Magpies conceded 62 goals in the Premier League this season, more than Everton and Fulham.
It is not surprising that Howe wants to strengthen his back, starting with a new goalkeeper. Pope returned against Brentford on Sunday after missing 27 games because of a dislocated shoulder.
Howe primarily wants a young goalkeeper to challenge Pope for the starting role and Mamardashvili could be a fantastic addition to the club. Only three teams have conceded more goals than Valencia this season, and it is largely because of their goalkeeper, who was adjudged the club’s player of the season in 2023.
He is now ready to leave La Liga and is open to the possibility of playing in the Premier League.
