Leeds United failed to secure automatic promotion to the Premier League, so they will have to reach the top flight via the play-offs.
It will be really interesting to see how the club approach the summer transfer window if they fail to secure promotion, as Daniel Farke would be forced to operate on a tight budget.
The Whites could be forced to sell a few players as well, especially those who are out on loan and do not feature in the manager’s long-term plans.
Ian Poveda could be one of such players who are likely to seal their exit from Elland Road permanently. According to a report from The Star, Sheffield Wednesday are keen to sign Poveda permanently in the summer transfer window.
The 24-year-old moved to Hillsborough on loan in the January transfer window. The deadline-day signing for Wednesday has made a significant impact during his loan spell, although he missed out on the last five matches of the season due to a hamstring injury.
The Owls boss, Danny Röhl, is a big admirer of Poveda’s talents. He sees the winger as an “important target” for the Championship club ahead of the summer transfer window. Sheffield Wednesday are facing stiff competition from other Championship sides and abroad for his signature.
Leeds United would be happy to offload Ian Poveda
Poveda joined from Manchester City, signed by Marcelo Bielsa in January 2020. He has managed to show his brilliance only in flashes and never quite reached the dizzy heights everyone thought he would when he first joined.
He has made only 36 appearances for the club in all competitions and spent time on loan at Blackburn Rovers and Blackpool. Under Farke, he managed only one start in the Championship before he was sent on loan and it became clear that the Whites boss doesn’t rate him highly.
Poveda’s contract expires at the end of the season, so Leeds are unlikely to offer him a new deal. He will leave the club as a free agent.
