Ange Postecoglou has done well at Tottenham Hotspur but he needs financial backing from Daniel Levy in the summer, according to Simon Jordan.
Spurs are fifth in the Premier League table, seven points behind Aston Villa, having played two games less.
They suffered a big blow last week after losing 3-2 against Arsenal. The back-to-back defeats against the Gunners and Newcastle indicate that Tottenham need to bolster the squad to compete with big clubs in the league.
Writing his column for the Daily Mail (page 72; 2/5/2024), Jordan says he is not convinced with some of the players like Pedro Porro, Dejan Kulusevski and Timo Werner.
Werner joined in the January transfer window from RB Leipzig on loan. The 28-year-old has started most games for the Australian and has made an impact.
However, the German forward will be out for the rest of the season after picking up a hamstring injury. Spurs have the option to sign him for £15m, but whether they will trigger the option remains unclear.
Werner is often criticised for his lack of output, and Jordan has slammed the player, calling him a “speedboat without a brain.”
Jordan wrote: “I have my doubts about players such as Pedro Porro and Dejan Kulusevski, too, while Timo Werner is a speedboat without a brain. I’m not convinced they are good enough, and Postecoglou will need to upgrade a number of players if Spurs are to close the gap on the teams above them.”
Should Tottenham sign Timo Werner permanently?
Werner has started in 10 games for Spurs where he managed two goals and three assists so far. The German forward has pace and physical strength, and he gets into proper scoring areas as well, but his finishing and decision-making have often been questioned.
Postecoglou admitted that while Werner has made an “impact,” he still needs more clarity before making a decision about the German. Porro and Kulusevski are key players for the Spurs, and Postecoglou won’t sell them, no matter what Jordan thinks.
Tottenham should look to add quality players in their forward areas, and they need more depth at the back as well.
