Smart move as Rangers defender Leon Balogun pens new Ibrox deal

Rangers defender Leon Balogun has signed a new one-year contract to stay at Ibrox, according to The Scottish Sun.

The newspaper reported via their website on 27 May that the 35-year-old defender has really impressed Philippe Clement, and has now signed a new deal at the club.

The Bears are expected to get rid of some of their fringe players this summer, especially those who are nearing the end of their contracts.

Kemar Roofe has been allowed to depart, while Borna Barisic and John Lundstram will be allowed to move to Turkey this summer. Soon-to-be free agents Ryan Jack and John McLaughlin are likely to depart as well. It comes as a bit of a surprise that Balogun has been allowed to extend his deal.

The 35-year-old defender was due to be out of contract this summer, but he expressed his desire to continue after Rangers lost 1-0 against Celtic in the Scottish Cup final.

Terrific move from Rangers boss Philippe Clement

Clement wants to bring at least eight new players to Ibrox this summer, and defence is one area that needs special attention.

The Gers have already signed Brazilian full-back Jefte and are closing in on a deal for Jose Cordoba. However, Connor Goldson could face an uncertain future at the club after he was axed before the end of the campaign.

John Souttar has shown his quality in flashes and missed the run-in and the cup final through injury. His injury record is proving to be a major headache for the Gers.

Ben Davies has not really made a massive impact, and like Goldson, he, too, faces an uncertain future. Considering all these factors, keeping Balogun, an experienced defender who has earned the trust of his manager, makes a lot of sense. Rangers’ decision to tie him up on a new deal looks like an excellent move.

In other Rangers news, the Gers are in advanced talks to secure winger transfer this summer.
