Tottenham eyeing ‘realistic’ summer move for Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher

Tottenham eyeing 'realistic' Conor Gallagher move amid push for CL qualification

Tottenham Hotspur are planning to act on their long-standing interest in Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher this summer amid plans to bolster Ange Postecoglou’s squad.

The Telegraph reports that the north Londoners view the 24-year-old as a ‘realistic option’ with Spurs preparing for the possibility of missing out on the Champions League places this season.

The Lilywhites are perched in fifth place in the Premier League table, seven points adrift of Unai Emery’s relentless Aston Villa, although they have two games in hand.

Spurs’ Champions League push has suffered major blows in recent weeks after losing their last two games to Newcastle United and Arsenal, but they could close the gap on Villa with a win against Chelsea on Thursday.

The Stamford Bridge rematch also offers Postecoglou’s side a chance for revenge against the Blues after a 4-1 thrashing at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the reverse fixture.

Anything but a win against Chelsea could be the final nail in their Champions League aspirations, and Spurs have begun planning for that scenario.

They have identified Gallagher as a realistic target, although whether or not they will move for the England international depends on Chelsea lowering their £50 million asking price.

Gallagher has been a mainstay in the Chelsea midfield this season, missing just one Premier League game through suspension thus far.

Not only is the Englishman resistant to injuries, but he has also been consistent for the Blues, establishing himself as a vital part of Mauricio Pochettino’s set-up.

Gallagher has notched four goals and six assists in 32 league outings thus far. He also averages 1.5 key passes per 90 and has created an impressive ten big chances this season.

His off-the-ball contributions have also been phenomenal, averaging 1.2 interceptions, 2.3 tackles, and a staggering 6.1 ball recoveries per match, which is key to Pochettino’s brand of football.

Despite his contributions, Chelsea are open to cutting him loose as he enters the final year of his contract at Stamford Bridge.

Tottenham should be chomping at the bit to secure his services this summer, especially if they can negotiate a fee below Chelsea’s hefty £50m valuation.
