Tottenham Hotspur want Torino centre-back Alessandro Buongiorno

Tottenham Hotspur are ready to sign Torino centre-back Alessandro Buongiorno when the summer transfer window opens, according to Italian outlet Tutto Mercato Web.

The Italy international is attracting plenty of interest ahead of the summer, and Spurs are one of the clubs monitoring his situation.

However, landing the 6ft 3in Buongiorno will not come easy for Tottenham as the likes of Chelsea, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Napoli, Atalanta and Juventus are also keen on recruiting his services for next season.

Torino want at least €40 million for the 24-year-old but are hoping his value will have increased significantly after the European Championship ends in July.

Moving to the Premier League could appeal to Buongiorno, with Newcastle United recently linked with him, but Spurs could have an upper hand in the race if they end up qualifying for the Europa League.

The North London club will not be playing in the Champions League next season after losing 2-0 to Manchester City on Tuesday night, but they need to win or draw against Sheffield United on the final day of the campaign on Sunday to secure a spot in the group stages of the Europa League with Chelsea just three points behind them and with a superior goal difference.

Manager Ange Postecoglou will be desperate to ensure Tottenham do better next term, and it appears Buongiorno has been identified as a transfer target as Spurs need to fix their defence.

They have conceded 61 goals in 37 league games this term and lost 12 times, with five of those defeats coming in their last six games.

Buongiorno can help improve their defence, with his aerial presence and ball-intercepting skills key qualities which have attracted suitors to him.

He is also a threat going forward, with three goals to his name in 27 Serie A games this term, and landing such a player could be huge for Tottenham.
