Tottenham may have received big boost in Albert Gudmundsson chase

The summer transfer window will be crucial for Tottenham Hotspur, regardless of where they finish the season.

Simon Jordan wrote in his column for the Daily Mail (2 May) that Daniel Levy needs to back Ange Postecoglou in the summer transfer market.

Postecoglou has already stressed the importance of signing a new centre-back, but Spurs need to strengthen other areas as well.

The Spurs manager could prioritize adding a new striker. In the past few months, the north London club has been heavily linked with a move for Genoa striker Albert Gudmundsson, and they may have just received a big boost in their pursuit of him.

Genoa president Alberto Zangrillo has hinted that the player could leave at some point, and a deal could be on the cards.

He said, as quoted by Football London: “He (Gudmundsson) is a young, serious guy, who wants to cultivate ambitions that we are not able to guarantee at the moment. It is useless to deny it. He has a national and international market, it is correct for both parties to make evaluations, what matters is the final result.”

During the January transfer window, Calciomercato reported that West Ham were interested in signing the striker as well.

Gudmundsson joined the Italian club for less than €2m, but his value has risen to €30m (£25m). He has a contract at the club until 2027, but the Genoa president’s comments indicate that they are ready to offload the striker.

The Iceland international has scored 16 goals in all competitions this season and has registered three assists. Spurs have already signed Radu Dragusin from Genoa, and they could return to the Serie A club to sign their next prized asset.

Only Richarlison and Son Heung-Min have reached double figures at Spurs this season. Even if Spurs miss out on the Champions League, they can still offer Europa League football, which could be a big incentive for Gudmundsson to move to the Premier League.
