AC Milan in for Emerson Royal, Spurs could sell for £21m

AC Milan are interested in recruiting the services of Tottenham Hotspur defender Emerson Royal ahead of the summer transfer window, and Spurs could sell him for £21 million, according to Italian outlet Corriere Dello Sport.

The North Londoners snapped up the Brazil international right-back from Barcelona in September 2021 for £26m, and while he has been one of their key players since then, it appears they are prepared to make a £5m loss by selling him.

Emerson, 25, ended 2023-24 with a goal in 24 appearances across all competitions, and manager Ange Postecoglou could be open to letting him leave in a bid to raise funds to bolster his squad after they missed out on a top-four finish.

Milan have evaluated the Tottenham star and his representatives have met with the Serie A club for talks.

However, it will take a juicy personal offer for them to convince Emerson to join them and negotiations have yet to advance because of that.

The South American is out of contract in 2026 and this summer represents the best chance for Spurs to cash in on him.

While his versatility has come in handy over the years given that he can play across the backline, Tottenham need to move on from Emerson as he has not been very effective going forward.

He has just four goals and two assists in 101 games for Spurs, and Postecoglou needs a right-back capable of regularly influencing the game in the final third if they are to win a trophy anytime soon.

Tottenham scored the least goals (74) out of the teams that finished in the top-seven, and they need to recruit quality players capable of creating chances and finding the back of the net across every area of the pitch.

Selling Emerson when the transfer window opens could be a smart decision, and Spurs cannot afford to miss out on another chance to cash in on him after rejecting a £20m bid from Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr for him in January.
