Everton have received a fresh bid from Serie A club Atalanta for defender Ben Godfrey.
According to transfer guru, David Ornstein, the Toffees have received an offer of around £8.46 million from Atalanta for the 26-year-old defender, who has just one year left on his current deal at Goodison Park.
Everton have also received another bid for Godfrey, thought to be around £15 million. While Godfrey is keen to move to Italy, the Serie A club must come up with an offer close to Everton’s valuation for the deal to go through.
The Toffees have already sold Lewis Dobbin to Aston Villa, and if they can offload Godfrey, they will be in a strong position to stay within the limits of the Premier League’s financial rules (PSR).
In that case, they may not be forced to sell any of their star players, such as Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Amadou Onana, or Jarrad Branthwaite, this summer.
Should Everton sell Godfrey?
The Toffees defender managed 16 games last season for the club, and mainly managed game time towards the end of the season, playing mostly as a right-back.
Does Sean Dyche consider him as a first-choice centre-back at Goodison Park? No. But he can still be a utility player.
Unless any club come up with an offer that matches Everton’s valuation, there is no point in selling the defender at a reduced price. The Toffees can afford to let him go for free in 2025.
Godfrey has made 93 appearances for Everton since joining from Norwich in 2016. There is a feeling that he needs to play regularly to get into the England squad once again.
The defender has struggled with injuries at Goodison Park in recent years. However, Godfrey himself is keen to join Atalanta, so a potential exit cannot be completely ruled out in the coming weeks.
