Brenden Aaronson is set to stay at Leeds United this season after he held a positive conversation with Daniel Farke.
According to journalist, Tom Bogert, the 23-year-old attacking midfielder feels he has an “unfinished business” in England. Farke has big plans for him and wants him to play a “key role” in the club’s promotion push next season.
Writing for the Athletic on 10 June, Aaronson has an active release clause that allows him to leave Elland Road on a free loan again. The US international spent the 2023/24 season on loan at Union Berlin, but he has decided to stay at Leeds for next season.
Last season, he managed 30 out of 34 games for the German side and played in all six Champions League games. The Whites came close to securing promotion to the Premier League but lost 1-0 against Southampton in the Championship play-off final.
Good move for Leeds United?
Having failed to secure promotion last season, Leeds will have to operate on a tight budget this summer. They are expected to sign a few players, while may have to sell top talents like Crysencio Summerville or Archie Gray.
Farke is highly likely to offload some fringe players who are not in his long-term plans, but Aaronson’s situation is different.
He is a highly-rated attacking midfielder and the Whites paid around £25 million for his services in 2022. Aaronson appeared in 36 of the club’s 38 games in the Premier League, but he was criticised for lack of goals and assists.
However, he can rediscover form in the Championship, similar to how Georginio Rutter, Dan James and Willy Gnonto did last season.
The relegation release clause in the contract of Aaronson allows interested clubs to cover his full salary as part of the deal, but the impression coming out of Elland Road is that he is likely to stay and play a big part under Farke next season.
