Door open for West Ham to strike deal for Dominic Calvert-Lewin

West Ham are one of the clubs showing keen interest in signing Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

According to a report from Chronicle Live, the Hammers and Brentford have made contact with Everton over the signing of the 27-year-old striker, who has just one year left on his present contract at Goodison Park.

Everton have been in talks with Newcastle United over the possible sale of the England striker. However, the Magpies have pulled off the race after Everton refused to lower their asking price, which is reported to be in excess of £40 million.

With Newcastle out of the picture for the time being, the door may have opened for the Hammers to strike a deal for Calvert-Lewin.

West Ham need to bolster their forward department in the summer window. Michail Antonio is approaching the twilight of his career and he could be off to the MLS. Likewise, Danny Ings could be sold if the Hammers receive a good offer for him.

In such a scenario, signing an experienced striker is necessary. West Ham have signed Brazilian youngster Luis Guilherme from Palmeiras but he is mainly seen as a long-term prospect, rather than someone who will make an instant impact.

Calvert-Lewin is a proven Premier League striker who could be ready to move elsewhere. He has rejected contract offers at Goodison Park, and West Ham could tempt him to move to the London Stadium with a lucrative offer.

His injury record in recent years could be a concern. But last season, Calvert-Lewin managed over 35 games for the Toffees and scored eight goals.

While £40 million is too much for a player who is about to enter the final year of his deal, the door is now open for the Hammers to strike an agreement that suits both parties.

In other West Ham news, the Hammers are showing keen interest in signing Leeds winger this summer.
