Everton defender Ben Godfrey set for medical ahead of Atalanta move

Everton defender Ben Godfrey is close to leaving Goodison Park to join Serie A club Atalanta.

According to Alan Myers (27 June), the 26-year-old defender will leave Italy on Friday (28 June) to undergo his medical ahead of the £10.15 million move.

Fabrizio Romano reported on X on 27 June that Godfrey has already agreed personal terms with the Serie A club.

Everton also received an offer from French club Lyon, but Godfrey wanted to move to the Italian club instead.

“Ben Godfrey to fly to Atalanta tomorrow to undergo a medical ahead of €12M move,” wrote Myers.

He has one year remaining on his current deal, and the Toffees initially valued him at around £15 million. However, they appear to be happy with Atalanta’s new offer.

Everton have already sold Lewis Dobbin to Aston Villa and it looks like Godfrey will become the next player to be heading out of Goodison Park.

The combined transfer fees of Dobbin and Godfrey should be enough for the Toffees to stay within the Premier League’s financial limits.

Godfrey joined from Norwich City in the summer of 2016 and has made 94 appearances for the Toffees. He is a solid centre-back, who is also capable of playing a right full-back.

Unfortunately, his time at Goodison Park has been blighted by injuries that prevented him from featuring regularly. Under Sean Dyche, he struggled to cement his place in the side initially but played regularly at right-back towards the end of the season.

With Everton heading in a new direction under a potential new owner, the deal makes sense for all parties involved. Godfrey probably needs a club where he will be valued again, while Everton could reinvest the money into the squad.
