Everton and Newcastle are looking to sign players from each other, and the deal could be “close”, according to Sky Sports journalist Alan Myers.
Keith Downie posted on X (22 June) that Newcastle are in talks to sign Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin and hope to strike a deal. There’s still a lot of work to do to reach an agreement with the club and agree to personal terms with the player.
In a separate deal, the Toffees are looking to sign Newcastle winger Yankuba Minteh. Both deals would help the clubs with their respective PSR issues.
While answering questions on X, Myers said both the deals will be separate if it happens.
Myers adds that the Toffees will not be able to land Minteh cheaply after a successful season with Feyenoord. The Sky Sports editor also believes that both the deals can take place by the end of this month.
“I think it’s close but I may be wrong,” wrote Myers.
According to Alex Crook of talkSPORT, talks for Calvert-Lewin are ongoing, but nothing is close at this moment.
The Athletic (22 June) reports that the two teams want to reach an agreement. The Magpies are long-term admirers of Calvert-Lewin who scored eight goals last season. The 27-year-old striker has only a year left on his current deal, and Everton value him at around £15-20 million.
The Toffees have already rejected a £43 million bid from defender Jarrad Branthwaite from Manchester United, and they are likely to keep the 21-year-old player if Calvert-Lewin by the end of this month.
Newcastle also need to sell players to comply with the PSR rules, and they could offload Callum Wilson. In case the 32-year-old striker leaves St James’ Park, Calvert-Lewin could come in as a natural replacement.
In case Calvert-Lewin leaves the club, Everton need to find a solid replacement, as they cannot rely only on Beto. They need someone with Premier League quality and expect the club to be linked with a host of strikers in the coming days.
