Graham Smyth: Leeds United fielding enquiries for Archie Gray

Leeds United have fielded enquiries for midfielder Archie Gray, according to Graham Smyth

The versatile 18-year-old midfielder enjoyed a breakthrough campaign for the senior side last season, making 47 appearances in the Championship. He was almost ever-present for Leeds playing in multiple positions.

He is the “crown jewel” who has emerged from the Leeds academy. Archie is the latest player hailing from the great Gray family, whose members have graced the green blades of Elland Road in the past.

The Telegraph reported on 27 June that Premier League club Chelsea have shown interest in signing the youngster who mostly played at right-back last season under Daniel Farke. However, the Blues are yet to lodge a formal bid for the player.

Writing for the Yorkshire Evening Post, the reliable journalist claims that Tottenham Hotspur have also shown an interest, and other clubs have made enquiries. In Germany Borussia Dortmund are interested, but the Whites have yet to receive any official offer.

“Leeds sources admit they have received interest from other clubs in the 18-year-old, though nothing has reached the stage of official bids. And it seems unlikely that those three clubs will be alone in testing Leeds’ resolve if the starter pistol sounds on a bidding war,” wrote Smyth.

The Whites are expected to demand a fee well over £30 million for Gray. Ideally, Farke should persuade him to stay for another season at Elland Road and help the team achieve the dream of getting into the Premier League.

If the Whites fail again, Gray can decide to move elsewhere. However, the club’s financial situation is such that a firesale is expected at Elland Road, as Leeds struggles to comply with the financial rules.

The likes of Crysencio Summerville or Wilfried Gnonto have attracted interest from elsewhere, while French club Marseille have set sight on signing Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier, who could be tempted to leave.
