Ipswich Town look to secure deal for West Ham defender Ben Johnson

Ipswich Town are reportedly looking to sign West Ham defender Ben Johnson on a free transfer.

The Hammers have offered the 24-year-old a new five-year contract extension, but he was still considering all his options.

Ipswich, the newly promoted Premier League club, are now looking to sign him.

According to a report from The Telegraph, Johnson can move without a fee this summer as his contract expires in a few days.

Kieran McKenna wants him to add competition in full-back areas to strengthen his options at the back.

After returning to the Premier League, Ipswich Town hope to sign a few players with proven quickly and tons of experience, and Johnson fits the bill.

Ben Johnson could look to depart West Ham

Johnson has progressed through the youth ranks at West Ham and has made over 105 senior appearances since making his senior debut in 2019.

He became a key player under David Moyes, and played in multiple roles under the former Hammers boss. Primarily he was used as a right-back, but he showcased his versatility playing in central defence as well.

However, since the 2022-23 season, he has gradually lost his starting role in the side, with Moyes preferring Vladimir Coufal ahead of him.

It has been reported widely that Johnson has been looking to leave the club for a while now in search of regular game time, and Ipswich could offer him an escape route.

Moreover, he demanded a higher wage package, which the Hammers were unwilling to pay. Mckenna can properly exploit Johnson’s versatility, as Johnson probably would relish settling down at a club where he would be given more importance.

West Ham tried their best to persuade him to stay, but it looks likely that he would leave the club to join the newly promoted side.
