Leeds United may have to pay a big price after missing out on promotion to the Premier League last season.
There is a “growing financial concern” at Leeds, and the Yorkshire club need to sell players to comply with Profit and Sustainability Rules.
According to a report from the Daily Mail, the Whites must raise up to £100 million in player sales after they failed to secure promotion.
The newspaper reported online on 28 June that “sources close to top-flight clubs” expect a fire sale at Elland Road this summer, with several key players most likely to leave the club at the end of this month.
Crysencio Summerville and Wilfried Gnonto “deemed most likely to leave” Elland Road this summer, while doubts remain over the futures of Illan Meslier and Archie Gray.
Summerville enjoyed a phenomenal 2023-24 campaign last season, scoring 20 goals and providing nine assists in the Championship. Several top-flight clubs, including West Ham, have been linked with a move for the Dutch winger, and Leeds expect a bidding war for him.
Gnonto was heavily liked with a move to Italy last summer and he even tried to force a move away from Elland Road, a trick that didn’t work. After struggling to make an impact, Gnonto did well in the second half of the season, playing mostly on the right. There is a possibility that he could leave this summer.
Leeds were anticipating bids to come for Meslier who has been outstanding for the club since moving from Lorient. He has made 175 appearances for the Whites and has been the first-choice goalkeeper at Elland Road since Marcelo Bielsa’s days.
Marseille have registered an interest in him, but they need to pay over £20 million to sign the 24-year-old goalkeeper.
Several Premier League and European clubs are also keen to sign Gray in the summer window. Chelsea have shown an interest in signing the 18-year-old versatile midfielder, but Leeds are demanding a fee of over £30 million for him.
