Olympique Marseille have set their sight on signing Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier in the summer transfer window.
According to a report from Foot Mercato, Marseille have made contact with the 24-year-old goalkeeper as they prepare for a hectic summer.
Meslier joined the Whites initially on loan from Lorient, and the move was later made permanent. In five seasons at the club, he has made 165 appearances in all competitions and has been the number-one goalkeeper since Marcelo Bielsa’s days.
However, after Leeds failed to secure promotion to the Premier League last season, Meslier will spend another year in the Championship. If Marseille come up with a good offer, he could be tempted to leave.
He has a contract at Elland Road until 2026, but his journey could end this summer. A move to Marseille would also enhance his chances of being called up to the national team.
Meslier is both an “experienced” and promising goalkeeper, and Marseille are ready to try their luck in bringing him to Ligue 1 this summer.
Should Leeds United sell Meslier?
Meslier has been outstanding for the Whites over the years, and he is one of the first names on the team sheet.
Ideally, Leeds should keep hold of him as the Whites prepare to make another strong challenge for the promotion next season. Daniel Farke will need his best players at the club.
Having said that, Meslier could be tempted to return to his homeland and play for one of the big clubs in the country.
Every player has a price, and Leeds are expected to demand a high price for Meslier. That’s a guarantee. He still has two years remaining on his current deal at Elland Road, and Marseille will have to pay a massive transfer fee for him.
