Leeds United defender Max Wober has confirmed that he has held initial talks with the Yorkshire club over his long-term future.
The 26-year-old joined Borussia Monchengladbach on loan last season from Leeds and enjoyed a decent 2023-24 campaign.
The deal does not include a loan clause, so he will return to Elland Road in the summer after the Euro 2024 Championships.
The versatile left-back, who can also play as a central defender, has already said goodbye to the Gladbach camp and confirmed that he hasn’t heard from them yet.
Gladbach could be interested in getting him back again, but Leeds hold all the aces here. Wober has a long-term contract at Elland Road, and the Whites will decide his future.
He has admitted that the Whites have told him to focus completely on Euro 2024 and expects talks to be held once the competition is over. Currently, there is total “radio silence.”
“At the moment, there is currently total radio silence on both sides,” Wober told Bild.
“I’ve heard from Leeds there will be talks once the European Championships are over. They want me to concentrate on Austria for now.”
What the future holds for Max Wober at Leeds?
Wober started the opening game for Austria in the 1-0 loss against France. It was a night to forget for him as he suffered the misfortune of scoring the decisive own goal, earning harsh criticism from local newspapers.
The defender will be looking for redemption when Austria face Poland and Netherlands in their next games. Daniel Farke can only make a decision on Wober’s future once he returns to Leeds after the tournament.
The summer window will be tricky for the Whites who aim to fight for automatic promotion yet again. On one hand, Leeds will try to get rid of some of their unwanted players to free up space, while on the other, the Whites may retain some of the players who were on loan elsewhere last season, as they need depth in the squad.
Farke wants to give Brenden Aaronson another chance to impress at Leeds, and he can do the same with Wober. Having said that, another loan move elsewhere or a permanent exit cannot be completely ruled out.
