Newcastle United fanbase has been “shocked” by the news that the club tried to offload Anthony Gordon this summer.
According to Craig Hope, the 23-year-old attacking midfielder should be an “indispensable” asset for the Magpies, but due to their desperate condition to comply with the PSR rules, they are forced to take drastic measures.
This week, the Magpies approached Liverpool to sell Gordon, a player the Reds admire, as they strive to comply with financial rules. However, talks have broken down.
According to a report from the Daily Mail, Newcastle wanted Jarell Quansah to move in the opposite direction. Liverpool do not want to lose Quansah as they see him as a future England international.
While there is still a chance that the Reds could be willing to revive talks with a different package for Gordon, the news has shocked the Newcastle fanbase.

Gordon is one of the key players for the Magpies under Eddie Howe, and the desire to sell him shows how bad the financial condition is at the moment.
Newcastle have tried to offload Yankuba Minteh this summer, but the deal hasn’t materialised. They need to sell players before June 30, or else face a point deduction, similar to what Everton and Nottingham Forest faced last season.
Gordon is currently with the England squad for the Euro 2024 Championships, and a medical in Leipzig was mooted, had the deal gone through.
He joined the Magpies from Everton for £45 million 18 months ago and is a hugely popular figure. Last season, he scored 11 goals and 10 assists in the Premier League and was the player of the season for Newcastle last year. He is happy at St James’ Park, and enjoying his football under Howe.
However, there is an acceptance Newcastle need to trade, albeit reluctantly, to meet PSR.
Newcastle are also in talks with Nottingham Forest over a potential deal for winger Anthony Elanga that will see Elliot Anderson go in the opposite direction, but chances are high that the deal won’t progress.
