Newcastle United stunned by Everton approach as Dominic Calvert-Lewin deal off

Newcastle United have pulled out of the race to sign Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

The Magpies have been in talks for a while to sign the 27-year-old Toffees striker, but they have been unable to strike a deal for him.

According to The Telegraph, “sources have revealed” that Newcastle are “stunned” by Everton’s transfer approach in this case. The Toffees have taken a hard stance and refused to lower their asking price for Calvert-Lewin.

Everton showed interest in signing Newcastle winger Yankuba Minteh but he is unlikely to move to Merseyside. Lyon have offered more money for the Gambia international, and Everton appear to have missed out on signing him.

The Toffees have set an asking price of over £40 million for Calvert-Lewin who has only a year left in his current deal at Goodison Park. Newcastle could try their luck again towards the end of the window, but they will not match Everton’s asking price.

Everton should now look to agree long-term deal with Dominic Calvert-Lewin

Everton have secured two signings already. Exciting midfielder Tim Iroegbunam has moved from Aston Villa, and Jack Harrison has completed his loan move today (24 June) to join Goodison Park yet again.

The Toffees do not have the option to sign him permanently, but they could approach him again, provided the loan spell goes smoothly according to plans.

Having sold Lewis Dobbin to Aston Villa, the Toffees probably feel that they have done enough to stay within the financial limits, and will avoid any punishment as a result.

That is why they probably took a hard stance on Calvert-Lewin. Everton are not going into panic mode about selling their star player, and they can look forward to offering him a fresh new deal.

Calvert-Lewin has struggled with injuries in recent years but he managed eight goals in 38 games for Everton last season.
