Odysseas Vlachodimos set to move to Newcastle United

Newcastle United are on course to sign Nottingham Forest goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos.

According to Fabrizio Romano, the 30-year-old goalkeeper has agreed to move to Tyneside and a medical has been scheduled for later in the day.

The 42-times capped Greece goalkeeper is a vastly experienced player who has played over 150 games for Benfica.

The Magpies were looking to sign a new goalkeeper this summer to compete with Nick Pope, and they have checked out several options.

Vlachodimos joined Forest last season from Benfica and managed seven appearances in all competitions.

Newcastle negotiated a deal for him while they were in talks to sell Elliot Anderson, who is moving to City Ground for a fee of around £35 million.

“Newcastle have booked medical for Odysseas Vlachodimos later today in order to complete move from Nottingham Forest.

Elliot Anderson will move to Nottingham Forest in £35m transfer, second one after Yankuba Minteh to Brighton. Vlachodimos has accepted, as Daily Mail called.”

The Magpies are also offloading young attacker Yankuba Minteh to Brighton for a fee in a similar range. The 19-year-old attacker spent the last season on loan at Feyenoord and heavily impressed for the Dutch side.

Newcastle find themselves in a financial mess where they need to offload players to stay within the limits of Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules.

The Magpies will hope that the two departures will ease the financial burden and they won’t face any severe punishment in the form of point deduction.

While Eddie Howe did not want to lose both young players, the situation forced the club to make tough decisions, especially in the case of Anderson, who has progressed through the club’s youth ranks.

However, getting around £70 million for two young players who have yet to prove themselves in the Premier League represents very good business.
