Rangers are at the “front of the queue” to sign Connor Barron in the summer transfer window as Philippe Clement’s Ibrox rebuilding project takes shape.
According to a report from the Scottish Sun, the Gers are ready to step up their interest in the out-of-contract Aberdeen midfielder.
Several clubs in Italy and England are keen to sign the 21-year-old, but he could prefer a move to Glasgow instead. The midfielder would be willing to discuss a move to Ibrox to work with Clement’s new-look squad.
Barron has been on a short break in Portugal but he can fly back to Scotland to undergo his medical and complete contract talks. He is a free agent at the moment, but Aberdeen would demand compensation for the player who has come through the youth ranks at Pittodrie.
Ibrox redevelopment takes shape under Clement
This has been a very busy summer transfer window for Rangers already. They have secured three signings so far, which will be officially confirmed once the transfer window opens.
If they manage to secure a deal for Barron, he would become the club’s fourth signing, following the additions of Jefte, Oscar Cortes, and Clinton Nsiala.
The Bears have also been linked with a move for Bristol City forward Tommy Conway, as Clement wants to bring a raft of new players to Ibrox.
The midfield is one area that needs bolstering after the departures of Ryan Jack and John Lundstram. Both senior players have played pivotal roles for the Gers all these years, and it won’t be easy to replenish their void.
Certainly, Barron is not the only answer. However, he knows the Scottish League very well and can develop into a fantastic player in the future. Probably, with that idea in mind, Rangers are planning to move for him.
He was on the brink of getting picked for Steve Clarke’s squad for the Euro 2024 Championships and could be a smart addition for Rangers if they can beat other suitors.
