Rangers suffer blow in Damian Garcia chase, Connor Barron could join Ibrox

Rangers have suffered a blow in the race to sign Damian Garcia who will not be moving to Ibrox this summer.

The Gers have shown interest in signing the 20-year-old this summer, but he has now decided to stay with Penarol and sign a new contract.

Garcia was approaching the final six months of his contract at the Uruguayan club. The Gers wanted to sign him on the cheap, possibly with the aim of making a future profit.

DS Sports have now reported that the midfielder is set to sign an extension until December 2026, and he will get a healthy pay rise.

Rangers need to bolster their midfield this summer, and the Bears will turn their attention towards Connor Barron.

According to a report from the Daily Record, the 21-year-old free-agent midfielder is now expected to undergo a medical with the Ibrox club.

Signing a new midfielder is a priority for Rangers

Philippe Clement looks to reshape his midfield this summer. Both John Lundstram and Ryan Jack have left the club following the expiry of their contracts and Rangers need to replenish their void.

Mohamed Diomande has signed on a long-term basis, but Clement needs more quality in midfield.

Barron is an exciting midfielder who knows Scottish football very well and could be a handy option for the Gers. While he will join on a free transfer, Aberdeen are likely to demand compensation for Barron as he has progressed through the youth ranks at Pittodrie.

Several clubs in Italy and England are keen to sign the 21-year-old, but it appears that the Gers have stolen a march on their rivals. If the deal goes through, the Scottish midfielder would become the club’s fourth signing, following the additions of Jefte, Oscar Cortes, and Clinton Nsiala.
