Tottenham in pole position to sign Leeds United midfielder Archie Gray

Tottenham Hotspur are in “pole position” to sign Leeds United youngster Archie Gray.

The Whites had agreed a deal in the region of £40 million for Gray, and the youngster even underwent a medical after agreeing personal terms.

However, Leeds have rejected Brentford’s offer as they were unhappy with the payment structure proposed by the Premier League outfit.

This has opened the door for Tottenham, who have started direct talks with Leeds about signing their crown jewel.

According to journalist David Anderson, Spurs are now leading the race to sign the 18-year-old midfielder who can also play right back.

Writing for The Mirror (transfer live blog, 30 June – 12:39 pm), Anderson says that a deal for Gray could be imminent.

Leeds keen to get any deal done by today, that is before the end of 30 June,  to comply with the EFL’s Profit and Sustainability Rules.

It appears that Tottenham are about to win that race, and Leeds will also meet the Football League’s financial guidelines by offloading their generational talent.

This could be a busy summer transfer window for Spurs. Ange Postecoglou wants to rebuild the squad to his own taste, and the north London club are likely to offload some of their midfielders.

Players such as Giovani Lo Celso, Bryan Gil, and Pierre Emile-Hojbjerg are likely to be sold before the end of the window. Spurs could also sell Richarlison and Yves Bissouma if they receive good offers.

It will be interesting to see if Leeds can negotiate separate deals for Joe Rodon and Oliver Skipp as part of the deal for Gray.

Rodon impressed heavily on loan last season from Spurs, and the Whites want to get him back as they expect to fight for promotion once again.

Daniel Farke would love to add Skipp to his ranks at Elland Road, although the 23-year-old midfielder is likely to receive offers from Premier League clubs.
