West Ham demand £35m for Nayef Aguerd

West Ham could be looking to sign more than one defender in the summer transfer window.

The Hammers have released Angelo Ogbonna, while doubts remain over the future of Kurt Zouma who struggles to play regularly due to injury issues.

The Times reported on 21 June that Nayef Aguerd wants to leave London Stadium in the summer window as well.

The 27-year-old centre-back joined West Ham from Rennes in the summer of 2022 on a big-money deal, and clubs in the Saudi Pro League are chasing him.

According to a fresh report from The Times, French club Lyon also looked at Aguerd, but they were told the Hammers defender would cost around £35 million.

Lyon have backed out of the race as the Moroccan defender is too expensive for them.

The curious case of Nayef Aguerd

Aguerd joined for a fee of around £30 million, signed by David Moyes. He missed a chunk of action in his first season at the club after picking up a long-term injury, but did well towards the end of the season, managing 18 appearances in the Premier League.

Last season, he played 28 games in all competitions, scoring two goals. However, he has failed to justify his price tag, and the Hammers will be more than happy to cash in on him.

However, the price set by West Ham could be a major stumbling block for interested parties.

Recently, Aguerd changed his agent. He has joined the CanteraSport agency, which notably represents Tanguy Ndombele, Kurt Zouma, and Benoit Badiashile.

While he is a regular starter for the Morocco national team, he might not be a guaranteed starter under Lopetegui who is looking to sign players like Max Kilman and Kyle Walker-Peters.

He still has a contract at the London Stadium until 2027, but whether he will stay beyond the summer remains a big question.
