Arne Slot eyes move to sign Mats Wieffer for Liverpool

Liverpool are showing keen interest in signing Feyenoord defensive midfielder Mats Wieffer in the summer transfer window.

According to a report from De Telegraaf, Arsen Slot has given the “green light” for the Reds to make a move for him, and bring him to Anfield, having coached him in his previous club.

Despite having a plethora of midfielders in their ranks, Slot could still look to add a new defensive midfielder, and he wants to bring the 9-times capped Netherlands international to Anfield.

However, the Dutch outlet claims that Wieffer is close to joining Brighton, and Feyenoord’s general manager, Dennis te Kloese is now staying in England to complete the deal.

The Reds are making a “frantic” attempt to sign him, but Brighton may have already won the race. They are ready to pay around £26 million for his signature, but Wieffer is yet to sign an agreement with Brighton.

The midfielder is currently busy talking to Brighton’s management, and it remains to be seen if Liverpool will make a late attempt to hijack the deal.

Wieffer made a strong impact in the Champions League under Slot, and he could be tempted to move to Liverpool and reunited with his former manager.

He is already playing for the Dutch national side, and a move to a huge club like Liverpool should be ideal for his development. During the winter transfer window, he had the chance to move to Atletico Madrid, but he stayed at Feyenoord instead.

Liverpool have yet to sign a player this summer, but they could be looking to add one or two new faces if genuine quality is available.

Jurgen Klopp signed four new midfielders last season, while Slot has Curtis Jones, Stefan Bajcetic, and possibly Trent Alexander-Arnold as other options in midfield areas. A new defensive midfielder would make the squad even stronger.
