Arsenal have signed highly-rated Italian defender Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna for £42 million after agreeing a deal with the Serie A side last week.
The 22-year-old has penned a five-year deal with the Gunners. He is their second summer signing following the permanent acquisition of goalkeeper David Raya for £27m after his successful loan move from Brentford last season.
Arsenal have further reinforced a terrific backline that conceded only 29 goals in the Premier League last term with one of the best defenders in the Italian top flight.
“It feels amazing,” Calafiori said upon signing for the North Londoners (via Arsenal.com). “It was tough until now, but finally, we are here, and I cannot wait to start to train with the team and play for the fans.
“It is actually been my dream since I was 12 or 13 years old because I can see the level of the league here and the best players in the world, for me, play here. It’s a dream and not only for me but for everybody.”
Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta continues to bolster his squad for another Premier League title challenge.
His new signing can fill in at left-back, ousting Oleksandr Zinchenko, who struggled for form last term while providing cover in central defence for Gabriel Magalhaes.
Calafiori impressed at the 2024 European Championship with Italy despite their round of 16 exit.
A product of the AS Roma youth academy, he struggled with injuries early on before moving to Basel, where he established himself in the first team. He returned to Italy to join Bologna.
At the Serie A outfit, he blossomed into one of the most sought-after defenders in Europe. His versatility and technical ability make him a valuable asset to Arsenal.
The Gunners have beaten off competition from several top clubs to secure Calafiori’s signature. His arrival is a statement of intent from Arsenal as they look to build on last season’s success.
