Arsenal target Osimhen as backup option if Gyokeres pursuit falls through

Arsenal could prioritise a move for Victor Osimhen if they fail to land Viktor Gyokeres this summer, according to Area Napoli.

The Premier League runners-up want to add a prolific striker to their ranks this summer as part of their ambitious plans to challenge for the title next season.

After their initial pursuit of RB Leipzig talent Benjamin Sesko fell through, the Gunners switched their attention to Gyokeres.

However, their move for the Swedish marksman is complicated by the excessive £85 million release clause in his contract.

Gyokeres was one of the most lethal strikers on the continent last season, firing Sporting to the Primera Liga title with 29 goals in 33 league games.

In addition to finishing the 2023/24 season as the highest goalscorer in the Portuguese top flight, Gyokeres bagged a further 14 goals across other competitions, taking his tally to 43 in 50 games.

His remarkable goal-scoring form has attracted interest from Arsenal, but Sporting have refused to negotiate a lower fee for their top scorer.

Arsenal will have to trigger Gyokeres’ release clause if they want to sign him, but they could swoop for Osimhen if they decide to drop their interest in the Swede.

Recurring injury problems disrupted Osimhen’s 2023/24 campaign, but he still returned a respectable 17 goals and four assists, emphasising his status as one of the most prolific strikers in Europe.

Osimhen has made it clear he wants to play in the Premier League next season, but Arsenal are reluctant to match his £110m release clause.

Clubs in Saudi Arabia will have no problems matching Napoli’s demands, but Osimhen’s preference to remain in Europe complicates their plans to lure him to the Middle East.

Reports suggest Napoli will consider bids of around £85m for the 25-year-old, but Arsenal are currently focused on completing their move for Gyokeres.
