Chelsea have approached Villarreal to sign goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The Blues need a new number one and have their eyes on the 22-year-old. The Dane became a mainstay for the Yellow Submarines last term, and his performances have attracted the West Londoners.
Chelsea desperately need a new goalkeeper this summer, with Robert Sanchez and Djordje Petrovic failing to impress last term.
The two-time UEFA Champions League winners took the puzzling decision to sign Brighton & Hove Albion’s third-choice keeper Sanchez for £25 million last summer.
It came back to bite them when he started delivering sub-par performances, registering -0.22 goals prevented. He was equally poor with his feet, giving fans huge scares with his disappointing distribution.
An injury sidelined Sanchez and allowed Petrovic to take the reins in goal. However, the Serbian was just as poor with his hands and feet, recording an appalling -8.9 goals prevented and conceding 38 goals in 23 Premier League appearances.
New boss Enzo Maresca has reportedly assessed the squad and decided he wants a new keeper. The Blues have now approached Jorgensen, who only established himself as a regular starter last season.
Interestingly, Jorgensen does not look better than any of Chelsea’s current goalkeeping options.
He conceded 64 goals and kept only six clean sheets in 37 appearances during the 2023/24 campaign, registering -1.02 goals prevented.
The deal is still in the early stages, but it is hard to envision the Villarreal shot-stopper moving the needle for Chelsea. Also, the West Londoners face competition from Marseille for his signature.
The Blues reportedly have three other options on their shortlist to reinforce the goalkeeping area, including Leicester City star Mads Hermansen, whom Maresca knows from their time with the Foxes.
However, Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili is not on Chelsea’s radar despite being linked with a move to London after his 2024 European Championship heroics and stellar La Liga campaign.
