Howe insists Gordon will stay at Newcastle this summer despite Liverpool interest

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has assured fans that winger Anthony Gordon will remain at the club despite reported interest from Liverpool.

The Reds were keen on a move for the 23-year-old Liverpool-born star after his stellar 2023/24 campaign.

Gordon notched 11 goals and ten assists (16 big chances created) in 35 league appearances for Newcastle last term.

His performances caught the eye of Liverpool, who wanted to reinforce their wing options, but both sides could not agree on a deal.

Gordon was keen on the move to return to his boyhood club, but things did not work out. He is not with the team at the Bavarian training camp due to an extended post-European Championship break but will be welcomed back with open arms upon his return, per Howe.

Howe dismissed any negativity surrounding the transfer saga. “He has always been the Anthony Gordon who has given absolutely everything to Newcastle, and I want to make that clear to all our supporters,” the Newcastle manager said (via The Guardian).

“Anthony needs a bit of a break, but by the time he comes back, he will be ready to go. He is such an important player for us. We did not want to lose anybody.”

After missing out on Gordon this summer, Liverpool must focus on other targets. The Reds have been slow out of the blocks in the transfer window, failing to complete any transfer for new manager Arne Slot.

The Merseysiders had an eye on Leny Yoro but pulled out, believing he was destined to join Real Madrid before Manchester United swooped for his signature.

The only transfer close to completion is the signing of 15-year-old Chelsea starlet Rio Ngumoha for the academy.

Meanwhile, Newcastle have signed Lewis Hall permanently from Chelsea, Lloyd Kelly and John Ruddy on free transfers as they look to compete for a place in Europe next season.
