Major blow for Arsenal as Real Madrid enter race for Riccardo Calafiori

Arsenal have reportedly encountered a major problem in their chase for Bologna star Riccardo Calafiori.

According to a report from Corriere di Bologna (July 18, Page 12), Real Madrid have joined the race for the 22-year-old after missing out on Leny Yoro.

The La Liga champions wanted to sign Yoro this summer, but the Frenchman is now poised to join Manchester United after they agreed a deal worth up to £62 million with Lille.

With Nacho Fernandez departing the Santiago Bernabeu, Los Blancos are looking to bring in a defender this summer.

They have now turned their focus on Calafiori, creating a big problem for Arsenal.

The Gunners looked poised to complete a £42 million deal for the 22-year-old after agreeing personal terms with him.

But Bologna have decided to pause the deal as they want to renegotiate the sell-on clause that was included in his contract when he joined from Basel last year.

The 50 percent sell-on clause means the Serie A outfit would only receive £21m if Calafiori completes a move to Arsenal.

Now Madrid have also joined the transfer race for the defender in another major blow for Mikel Arteta’s side.

Every footballer dreams of playing for the Spanish giants who lifted their record 15th Champions League title last season.

Calafiori has already agreed personal terms with the Gunners, but the appeal of playing for Real could see him changing his decision.
