Manchester United’s summer transfer window has kicked into high gear, with reports from Le10sport claiming they’ve made an opening bid for Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Manuel Ugarte.
The Uruguayan is just one of several names the Red Devils have been linked with in their quest to strengthen their midfield depth.
United’s reported offer sits at £38 million plus add-ons, placing them in a highly competitive race for Ugarte’s signature. Manchester City and Barcelona are also known to be interested in the 23-year-old.
However, the final decision rests with PSG manager Luis Enrique. He must decide whether to keep Ugarte or allow him to seek a new challenge elsewhere.
Ugarte started in 21 of his 25 appearances in the league last season and is open to a move that provides more first-team opportunities.
PSG paid £51m to sign the Uruguayan from Sporting CP last summer, but he could be on the move again after having a tough time adapting to life in the French capital.
United manager Erik ten Hag views Ugarte as the perfect replacement for Casemiro, who is expected to leave Old Trafford this summer.
The Brazilian is past his prime and clubs in Saudi Arabia are already knocking on his door, with United expected to recoup a significant sum from his potential exit.
Ugarte had a passing accuracy of 91% last term, much higher than Casemiro’s 83%. He also won a stunning 6.4 duels and 3.9 tackles per league game, with 7.2 ball recoveries.
Having been described as a ‘tireless‘ midfielder by PSG’s official website, Ugarte would be an ideal successor for Casemiro. However, the move will only advance if Enrique gives the green light.
Ugarte is one of four players United are actively pursuing this summer.
The Red Devils are in advanced talks to sign Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna, although they are still contemplating whether to activate his £34 million release clause or negotiate a transfer fee.
Negotiations are also ongoing with Bayern Munich for Matthijs de Ligt, while they’ve made a renewed bid for Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite.
