Celtic have secured a deal to sign Adam Idah from Norwich City permanently.
Idah joined the Bhoys in the January transfer window on loan from Norwich and impressed heavily. Brendan Rodgers was determined to bring him back, but the Bhoys were struggling to meet his asking price.
However, the Hoops have agreed a deal worth up to £9.5 million for the Republic of Ireland international. They will pay £8.5 million upfront, and another £1 million will be paid in add-ons if certain conditions are met going forward.
According to a report from the Daily Record (13 August, back page), Idah is set to head to Scotland on Tuesday (13 August) for a medical before sealing his “dream” move to Celtic.
The transfer fee eclipses the £7 million Celtic spent on Christopher Jullien. But it is still shy of the £9 million spent on Odsonne Edouard in 2018.
Celtic recouped some of the money by selling youth product Bosun Lawal to Stoke City for a fee of around £3 million and pocketed around £4 million for the sales of Oh Hyeon-gyu and Sead Haksabanovic.
Pressure on Adam Idah to deliver for Celtic
Impressing on a loan spell is one thing; becoming a club hero is another. The 23-year-old striker returns to Celtic Park with the burden on his shoulders of being one of the club’s most expensive signings.
He will be scrutinised when things are not going well. The best part is that Idah will get complete backing from Rodgers who now has two top-quality strikers at his disposal.
Rodgers has assured the fans once again that Celtic will add a left-back and another stopper to bolster the squad before the end of the window.
The Bhoys already boast a strong squad, and they have added two goalkeepers this summer, Kasper Schmeichel and Viljami Sinisalo. Midfielder Paulo Bernardo’s loan move has been made permanent.
Celtic have made a strong start to the new season, winning two games from two and scoring six goals without conceding as they beat Kilmarnock and Hibs.
