Liverpool have made a fine start to the 2024-25 season after winning 2-0 against Ipswich Town in the Premier League at Portman Road on Saturday (17 August).
Arne Slot has become the first Liverpool manager in 33 years who has won his first game in charge in the Premier League.
Goals from Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah in the second half sealed all three points for the Reds, although they were pretty lacklustre in the first half.
Liverpool struggled to impose themselves in the opening 45 minutes, but the second half was a pure joy to watch. They have played some fantastic football and could have added more goals.
Slot said after the match that the Reds lost many duels in the first half, and as a result, they couldn’t control the game. Once they made tactical adjustments, they looked a far better team.
The Reds manager said to TNT Sports, via BBC Sport: “First thing was we don’t have to speak about tactics if you don’t lose so many duels.
“I think we needed to win the long balls through the air. That helped and gave us control. I don’t think Ipswich could keep up with the tempo in the second half.”
Liverpool need new signings before the end of the window
The Reds boss made it clear that Liverpool will look to sign players to strengthen the squad, and it is up to Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards to help the manager.
Liverpool were heavily linked with a move for Martin Zubimendi, but he has decided to stay at Real Sociedad.
Even if the Reds manage to sign Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, he will join in 2025. Put simply, the Reds need a few players who can contribute to the side immediately so that they can challenge for the title.
Joe Gomez could leave the club in the final few days of the window, and Liverpool need another defender should he depart.
