Arsenal close to securing deal for Mikel Merino

Arsenal are close to securing a deal for Spanish midfielder Mikel Merino.

According to a report from The Mirror, the Gunners are in the process of finalising the £25 million signing of the Real Sociedad midfielder.

Arsenal have already agreed personal terms with the player, and talks have entered key stages to secure their second summer signing.

Mikel Arteta has prioritised signing a new central midfielder this summer, and the Gunners have now submitted a verbal proposal worth £25 million plus bonuses for the former Newcastle United midfielder.

Merino is entering the final year of his deal with Sociedad, and the La Liga club are willing to let him go.

Arsenal have held conversations with the player’s representatives over the past few weeks, and it appears that they are closing in on the midfielder who helped Spain to Euro 2024 glory in Germany earlier this summer.

Mikel Merino would be terrific signing for Arsenal

The Gunners have secured the signing of Bologna centre-back Riccardo Calafiori for a fee of around £42 million.

Arsenal seized the opportunity to sign Merino after he rejected a new deal at the Basque club. The 28-year-old is apparently excited at the prospect of returning to the Premier League and playing under Arteta.

Merino is a versatile midfielder. He traditionally plays as a number six, but he can also play in a more advanced box-to-box type role. Arsenal have two very good holding midfield players in Declan Rice and Jorginho, but they need someone who can carry the ball into the final third and play killer passes from midfield.

The Spaniard will bring his wealth of experience to an already star-studded squad and provide Arsenal the necessary spark needed to push for the Premier League title once again.

He would be a fantastic addition to the side, especially after the club decided to offload Emile Smith Rowe to Fulham.
