Arsenal to return with new offer for Mikel Merino after £21.4m bid rejected

Arsenal have been chasing a deal to sign Real Sociedad star Mikel Merino this summer.

They recently made a first formal bid worth around £21.4 million but that was turned down by the Spanish outfit.

However, The Guardian report the Gunners are prepared to be patient in their pursuit of the midfielder.

They are expected to return with a new offer in the coming days, although they realise it may take some time to complete a transfer for the 28-year-old.

It is said that Sociedad are demanding a fee around £30m for Merino who has only a year left on his current contract at the Reale Arena.

The La Liga club recently convinced Martin Zubimendi to stay despite Liverpool being prepared to pay his release clause. Now they are also said to be confident they can persuade Merino to follow suit.

However, that could be very difficult for Imanol Alguacil’s side as the Spaniard has already agreed personal terms with Arsenal and looks to have heart set on joining the English club.

Mikel Arteta’s side haven’t been very active in the ongoing transfer window. They have only signed Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna and have made David Raya’s loan move permanent this summer.

But they have a firm interest in Merino and are expected to secure a deal for him soon.

The 28-year-old would be an excellent signing for the English giants. Standing at six feet and two inches, he mainly plays in central midfield but can also be utilised as a box-to-box midfielder.

He has made 242 appearances across all competitions for Real Sociedad, with 27 goals and 30 assists to his name.

Merino also boasts Premier League experience having played for Newcastle United in the past.
