Celtic open talks to sign Arne Engels

Celtic are looking to sign a new midfielder in the final few days of the summer transfer window.

The Bhoys have agreed a deal to sell Matt O’Riley to Brighton. The Scottish Champions will receive a fee of around £25 million for the Denmark international, and it would reach around £30 million if add-ons are added.

Brendan Rodgers knows that new signings are required immediately, and Celtic have earmarked several targets.

The Hoops have stepped up their chase to bring Los Angeles playmaker Mateusz Bogusz to Celtic Park, and negotiations will continue after Sunday.

He is not the only one who is being linked with a move. According to Anthony Joseph, Celtic have opened talks with Augsburg over a potential deal for central midfielder Arne Engels.

The 20-year-old is a highly-rated young talent, and he is seen as a potential replacement for O’Riley. He has emerged as one of the top targets for Celtic, and the player himself in keen to join the Glasgow giants.

The Sky Sports journalist wrote on X: “Update: Celtic have opened talks with Augsburg over a potential deal for central midfielder Arne Engels.

“Sky Sports News revealed earlier this month that the 20yo is one of the club’s top targets to replace Matt O’Riley. It’s understood Engels is keen to join Celtic.”

The young central midfielder joined Augsburg from Club NXT in the January window of 2023. He has been a regular member of the side, and last season made 33 appearances in the Bundesliga.

It is quite clear that he is good enough to play for a top club like Celtic, and the Bhoys must come up with a tempting bid to lure him away.

Engels could be tempted to join a club that are competing for major domestic trophies, while the Bhoys can also offer him European football.
