Chelsea are on the cusp of securing the signature of Jadon Sancho from Manchester United in what could turn out to be a shrewd last-minute move by the Blues.
According to Fabrizio Romano, the west Londoners have agreed a deal to sign the England international on an initial loan with an obligation to make the switch permanent next summer.
After the loan move, Sancho will be expected to sign a long-term contract at Stamford Bridge.
Both clubs were close to an agreement earlier today, and a deal has now been agreed that will end his tumultuous three-year tenure at Manchester United.
Chelsea’s summer spending spree continues with Sancho’s arrival, joining Pedro Neto, Joao Felix, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, and Filip Jorgensen as new additions to Enzo Maresca’s first-team squad.
The winger spent the second half of last season on loan at his former club, Borussia Dortmund, making 21 appearances and scoring three goals.
He also played a key role in the Bundesliga club’s fairytale run to the Champions League final, where they eventually lost 2-0 to record-winners Real Madrid.
His return to Germany followed a disagreement with Man United manager Erik ten Hag, leading to his exclusion from first-team training.
Sancho returned to the fold to work with the main group earlier this summer but was omitted from United’s squad for the opening two matches of the Premier League season.
The 24-year-old has only featured in the Community Shield for United this season, getting just seven minutes of first-team football as the Red Devils lost to fierce rivals Manchester City in a penalty shoot-out.
Ten Hag has a wealth of options in wide areas, with Marcus Rashford, Amad Diallo, Alejandro Garnacho, and Antony all featuring there so far.
Summer addition Joshua Zirkzee can also feature on the flank when required, further bolstering United’s attacking options on the wing.
Chelsea’s next match is against Crystal Palace on Sunday, but Sancho’s deadline day move will come too late for him to be involved.
