Liverpool are preparing a move for Valencia goalkeeper Giorgio Mamardashvili this summer, according to Nacho Sanchis.
The 23-year-old was outstanding for the La Liga club last season, helping them to a ninth-place finish with his stunning performances between the sticks. Only six sides conceded fewer goals than Valencia in the top flight.
Mamardashvili kept 13 clean sheets in 37 league appearances for Los Che last term. He recorded the highest number of goals prevented in the league, with 9.26.
The Georgian carried those fantastic showings into the 2024 European Championship. His excellent performances caught the eyes of several clubs.
However, it appears Liverpool have put themselves in the driver’s seat for the €30 million-rated goalkeeper.
The Reds are looking for a long-term successor for Alisson Becker, who turns 32 later this year and has been attracting interest from the Saudi Pro League.
Liverpool understand that the Valencia keeper cannot challenge Alisson for the starting berth right now and want him to remain on loan at the La Liga outfit. The idea will appeal to Valencia’s desire to keep him for one more season.
Per the reports, the Reds are not alone in the hunt for Mamardashvili’s signature, with AFC Bournemouth reportedly also showing interest in his services.
Bournemouth already have stalwart Neto on their books and signed impressive youngster Alex Paulsen this summer but are in the mix for Mamardashvili.
Newcastle United also had a long-standing interest in the Valencia man as they seek a long-term replacement for Nick Pope. They were close to striking a deal with the La Liga club but their interest cooled.
With Liverpool now at the front of the queue and looking serious about snapping up their target, it will be interesting to see if Newcastle make any last-ditch moves.
Liverpool are still yet to make a signing for manager Arne Slot but that has not deterred their momentum with the Reds winning all their pre-season fixtures so far and looking imperious ahead of the 2024/25 season.
