Liverpool hold ‘concrete’ talks to sign Martin Zubimendi

Liverpool are really making a solid effort now to sign Spain midfielder Martin Zubimendi.

The Reds are yet to make a single signing so far, but they are looking to land a top-quality central midfielder this summer, with Arne Slot eyeing a number six.

Liverpool are yet to make a formal bid to sign the 25-year-old midfielder but they are in talks with the player and his representatives.

According to Florian Plettenberg, Liverpool have officially informed the La Liga club that they are interested in signing the midfielder.

They have taken permission from Sociedad and have held talks with Zubimendi. But no club-to-club talks have taken place at the moment.

Plettenberg wrote on X: “Understand that Real Sociedad have been officially informed that Liverpool is very interested in Martin Zubimendi.

“That’s why there are concrete and ongoing talks between Liverpool, the player, and his management. With the permission of Real Sociedad. No club to club talks at this stage. The 25 y/o midfielder has not yet informed his club that he wants to leave.”

Liverpool signed four midfielders last summer, but Slot feels that the squad lacks a top-quality no 6.

Zubimendi impressed for Spain in the Euro 2024 Championships and was superb in the final against England.

Jurgen Klopp signed Wataru Endo last summer, and he was superb last season. However, Slot probably sees him as a squad player next season.

David Ornstein recently claimed that the Reds are continuing to work on securing the deal for Zubimendi and they need to pay £51.7 million, the player’s release clause, in one full payment.

The two clubs would need to reach an agreement, but it seems Zubimendi has not yet decided whether he would stay at his boyhood club or move to Anfield.

Richard Hughes is key to the move, and the Reds are trying to convince him to leave Spain this summer.
