Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips is set to join newly-promoted Premier League club Ipswich Town on a season-long loan following an agreement, according to the Guardian.
The 28-year-old remains surplus to requirements at the Etihad Stadium club having spent the second half of last term with West Ham United, and he recently emerged as a transfer target for Ipswich.
Phillips has returned to Man City and was a regular during pre-season, featuring against Celtic, AC Milan, Barcelona and Chelsea, majorly playing at centre-back.
However, the former Leeds United star did not get to feature in the Community Shield game against Manchester United last Saturday, an indication that manager Pep Guardiola has no plans to count on him this season.
Ipswich are giving him a chance to redeem himself after losing his place in the England national team and missing out on the European Championship, and his addition to the Tractor Boys could be a much-needed boost for manager Kieran McKenna.
The Suffolk club are playing in the English top-flight for the first time since 1992 and they need a squad capable of staying up come May 2025.
Phillips is set to undergo his medical today and could feature against Liverpool on Saturday in their Premier League opener should everything get sorted out and he is registered before 12pm on Friday.
Beating the likes of Fulham and Everton to the Man City star is massive from Ipswich, and they will look to make further additions to their squad in the coming days having landed Liam Delap, Omari Hutchinson, Jacob Greaves, Arijanet Muric, Ben Johnson and Conor Townsend thus far.
Securing back-to-back promotions under McKenna was huge for the Portman Road club and they now have to prove that they belong in the big time.
