Manchester United are considering their midfield options after failing to secure a deal for Paris Saint-Germain star Manuel Ugarte, and Burnley midfielder Sander Berge is now under consideration, according to The Athletic.
The Clarets are prepared to sell the 26-year-old Norway international after relegating to the Championship at the end of last season, and the Red Devils officials have made contact with his representatives.
Berge is also keen to move on and Man United could be offering him a chance to continue playing Premier League football, and landing him would be cheaper, which is a sensible decision for the Red Devils with PSG demanding around €60 million from suitors for Ugarte.
The 6ft 5in Burnley star ranked highly in a series of metrics – including dribbles and pressured pass accuracy – last term despite his campaign ending in relegation, which attracted the Old Trafford club to him.
According to the Premier League, the Man United target hit a top speed of 35.90km/h last term, emerging as the 10th fastest of all players in the land, and the Red Devils could do with such a pacy number 6 within their ranks.
The ageing Casemiro proved again during some of the pre-season games that he no longer has the legs to combat in the middle of the park, and landing Berge could do manager Erik ten Hag a world of good.
The former Sheffield United star once earned rave reviews from Roy Keane, with the Man United legend dubbing him ‘a very good player’, and his major strengths include blocking the balls and playing through passes to those ahead of him on the pitch.
Berge also brings much-needed experience to the table having featured in almost 70 Premier League games and played 340 games as a professional, and while he is not a marquee signing, his addition to the Red Devils could be hugely beneficial in the new season and going forward.
